The garden sprouts crocuses and daffodils in early spring, followed by lilies in early summer and hydrangea throughout. Purple coneflower, the tall native plant known as echinacea , would happily take over the garden. We keep it contained. |

Pond
life
The
pond holds 200 gallons of water, six fish and three tadpoles. Three
frogs enjoy sunning on the side of the pond. These critters all wintered over with the help of a pond heater. Many birds bathe in two little ponds that feed the big one. |

Paths, globes and other delights Mulch not only holds down weeds, it makes a perfect pathway. This year, the paths are wider than ever. Bird feeders, obelisks and water sprinklers share the space with astilbe, bleeding heart, peony and goat's beard. |

Three decades after our wedding, we gave ourselves a planned garden on the side of the house we've never worked on. The path starts on one side, takes a twist and a turn, and leaves the garden at right angles to the start. After 30 years, we know life's like that. |
